Watercolorist Linda Kemp
One of the many watercolor books I've bought over the years is Linda Kemp's "Watercolor Painting Outside The Lines." I was so intrigued by her technique of negative painting that I had to try it. Her demonstrations make it look so easy, but I have yet to master the technique. I like her work so much that I wanted to share it with my fellow artists. This painting by Linda is an example of her technique.
Here also is a link to her website where you can see more of her paintings, view a short demonstration of negative painting, or order her DVD or best-selling book, and see her list of workshop schedules.
For a complete demonstration of two negative paintings - one a landscape and the other a Wisteria plant - scroll down at this site and look for her name. It is really worth watching all eight demonstration clips. It's a totally different approach to watercolor painting.

This is a very strong piece, I can see why you would want to try out this technique. I am trying new ideas out this week myself...not all successful!ha
ReplyDeleteThis is great, Jean. I will have a look at the sites - thanks for including them.
ReplyDeleteJean, I really like this piece. It is always hard when trying out new approaches to watercolour. I experiment and push the boundaries myself a lot….but it is remembering what works with what and why .......that frustrates me the most. I used to write down all my colour combinations and layering techniques, but these days with a lot more painting experience under my belt, some of it seems to have sunk in and now I can paint more intuitively! I have not seen this book, so will enjoy looking at the website link.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased to get such enthused responses to my post. Thanks Blue Sky Dreaming, Art with Liz and Maggie Latham. When I started my blog it was with the intention of sharing any experience I could with fellow artists. It's a great way to learn and form a support community.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading my blog.
Thank you for visiting my site and posting a comment.
ReplyDeleteYour work is beautiful. I just did a quick browse through your older posts and am quite impressed with your technique and ability.
I can see why you like Linda Kemp's work. Thanks for posting the link. Her work is also quite stunning.
Enjoy playing with the technique, and don't forget to share your results with us. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Thanks Ana
ReplyDeleteGlad you like me earlier posts. I'm experimenting with a few different techniques right now. Not happy with any of the results so far. Waste a lot of watercolor paper. Hopefully something will work which I can share with fellow bloggers.
Dear Jean, thanks for the links to Linda Kemp's sites, will have a look. I do know and like Linda's work, I think I have seen her in watercolour books that feature various artists.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the experimenting!

Dear Dianne
ReplyDeleteI've been trying this technique on and off for about four months but without any good results. I am persistent by nature but think this technique doesn't fit my style, much as I admire it and would love to be successful at it.
Thanks,Jean
Thanks for the links, and the book recommendation--there are so many watercolor instruction books out there.
ReplyDeleteI always admire the use of positive/negative when I see it in a painting, but rarely, if ever, remember to try it in my own. Another resolution, perhaps?
Hi Laura
ReplyDeleteAnother really good watercolor book is one I've mentioned before, Jeanne Dobie's "Making Colors Sing." It's the one I use as my watercolor bible.
This is a wonderful painting. I have been hearing a lot about this negative painting technique. Thanks for the book recommendation and the link to the demo. It will be fun to try this myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. Your story about your grandson made me smile.
Cheers!
