One of the many watercolor books I've bought over the years is Linda Kemp's "Watercolor Painting Outside The Lines." I was so intrigued by her technique of negative painting that I had to try it. Her demonstrations make it look so easy, but I have yet to master the technique. I like her work so much that I wanted to share it with my fellow artists. This painting by Linda is an example of her technique.

This is a very strong piece, I can see why you would want to try out this technique. I am trying new ideas out this week myself...not all successful!ha

ReplyDeleteJean, I really like this piece. It is always hard when trying out new approaches to watercolour. I experiment and push the boundaries myself a lot….but it is remembering what works with what and why .......that frustrates me the most. I used to write down all my colour combinations and layering techniques, but these days with a lot more painting experience under my belt, some of it seems to have sunk in and now I can paint more intuitively! I have not seen this book, so will enjoy looking at the website link.

ReplyDeleteI've been trying this technique on and off for about four months but without any good results. I am persistent by nature but think this technique doesn't fit my style, much as I admire it and would love to be successful at it.

ReplyDeleteAnother really good watercolor book is one I've mentioned before, Jeanne Dobie's "Making Colors Sing." It's the one I use as my watercolor bible.
This is a wonderful painting. I have been hearing a lot about this negative painting technique. Thanks for the book recommendation and the link to the demo. It will be fun to try this myself.
