Mist Over Mt. Tam

I just realized that the last three watercolors I have posted are all in shades of blue. I guess I'm exploring painting winter weather in all its forms. Mt. Tam is a very imposing mountain and one can see it from just about everywhere in southern Marin County. It dominates the landscape. The mountain is often shrouded in mist this time of year and has these lovely blue hues. This is a mix of ultramarine grayed down with Paynes Grey. I really like the various blues one can achieve with this mix. The sky has a hint of pale raw sienna and rose madder under the blue. I will take this watercolor to class this week and see what the critique will be.

Critique: I'm pleased to say that Jerry Stitt really liked this watercolor. He made particular mention of the dark, medium and light values, and the lost and found edges which he felt made the painting work well. For the first time since I have been attending his class, there were no suggestions as to "what would make this a better painting". Hope I can keep this up.

  2. Wow Jean, I think the critique will be that you have been very successful with this. It's beautiful. It has an oriental feel, and the near monochrome palette works so well to strenthen the atmosphere of this scene. I love those fluid passages in the mountain especially.

  3. Hello Jean. I agree with Mineke; this is stunning. I clicked on it to enlarge and marveled at all the variation in the color and surface. I really admire your "loose control" (which is how I think of it, though I may be wrong?)

  6. Hi Jean, I like this very much! Wahat would watercolour landscapists do without Paynes Gray?

  7. Spectacular watercolor, Jean! Really well done. I think you've reached a milestone of mastery with this and the Paynes Gray and blues are luscious.

Looking forward to lots more like this. I miss northern CA...

Saundra. Mt. Tam is quite mystical at this time of year.

Mineke: Thanks so much for your nice comments. I have started limiting my palette to achieve better color harmony.

Laura: I had not thought of it as "loose control" but really like the term which I think fits.

Irina, Jess, Karen and Joyfulartist thanks for your positive feedback.

Marie: I never used to like Paynes Grey but it is very useful to grey down other colors.

Melinda: Thanks so much. I do feel I've reached a milestone. Hope I can keep it up.

  9. Beautiful. You really captured the mountain mist. It reminds me of the the mornings I spent at an art retreat in the Blue Ridge mountains watching the mist reveal the mountains like an Asian painting.

  11. Jeane, lovely. I have to agree with Jerry. Before I saw his comments, I was thinking, I like the effective use of values, the lost and found edges, and that wonderful fog and tree line that say "california winter" in the coastal areas.
