Desert Twilight

Trying out different color combinations in glazing. It's difficult to decide in advance what colors will work well together to give the end result one is trying to achieve. I think this one worked quite well. Laura's comment got me thinking that I must remember to list the colors I use. For this one I used a light glaze of Raw Sienna and several glazes of brown madder and ultramarine blue. After glazing I painted in the landscape with brown madder mixed with paynes grey and used paynes grey neat for the dark bushes and splatters in the foreground.

  2. I agree--that dark pink glow is one I have seen at twilight; the scrubby dark shapes in the foreground are wonderful too, such great shapes!
Are you keeping a notebook of all your glazing color combinations and their results? You could sell copies to your admirers, including me! ;-)

    Thank you Irina.

Laura: Good idea to start keeping a list of the color combinations. I have not done that and should have. I'm finding it quite difficult right now to come up with a number of different combinations.

  4. You've captured the twilight glow very cleverly here. I find Payne's grey to be quite a tricky hue and I have shied away from using it, but you've shown how effective it can be in the right hands.

Thanks Gillian. I don't often use Payne's grey but it can be useful to dull down the brightness of ultramarine blue to make a really nice sky color.

  8. The painting looks so dreamy with your glazes, thanks for sharing the colors. I wish the tree to had life just like the surrounding atmosphere..just my thought:-)

Thanks Padmaja. Actually, my class instructor said I should have had a tall cactus there instead of a tree since it is a desert scene. I agree.

  10. Very luminous. I feels like twilight light in the southwestern part of the USA. Another winner!
