Stormy Sky

I am in the process of creating a new video course on how to paint dramatic skies. This is the painting that I am demonstrating. I am quite pleased with how it came out. I was going to add some distant trees on the right but decided against it at the last minute. Still not sure if that was the right decision. Would love some opinions on this.

  1. I love it as is, Jean, with the distant hills.
The sky is amazing, and what a beautiful gray.

  2. The sky has worked really well, nice and dramatic and the grey works with the yellow ochre land area. Nice fresh looking washes Jean!

  3. I can see why you were going to add trees there but I like it how it is - it has a sense of expectation, like something is going to happen in that space, a flash of lightening perhaps

  4. It is a really beautiful sky with fresh, undisturbed fusion of pigments. Lovely contrast with the orange field

  5. The trees might take attention away from that very dramatic sky. I think you made the right decision. I agree that the contrast of neutralized colors (blue & orange) really work well. You have the distant mountain and the grasses for added interest.
